What to Wear For No Gi Jiu Jitsu? | Easily Explained
Knowing what to wear to your first No Gi Jiu Jitsu class can be a little overwhelming.
In this page, we will explain what to wear for No Gi Jiu Jitsu.
What to Wear For No Gi Jiu Jitsu?
For a No Gi Jiu Jitsu class, the standard attire is to wear a rash guard, athletic shorts without pockets, and thermal legging pants.
Similar to how the Gi prevents you from sweating on others while avoiding mat burn, this attire works the same way but is much more compact and lightweight.
As the name suggests, no Gi is needed for No Gi Jiu Jitsu.
Below I'll list the items that I wear to No Gi class, and explain what each one does for me, and why I wear these specifically.
Rash Guard
A rash guard is a tight-fitting athletic shirt, that does a great job dealing with sweat without becoming dark and heavy such as cotton t-shirts.
It has a very stretchy and breathable fabric that allows me to train hard and sweat, without feeling limited in mobility.
You'll want to purchase a size up. I'm normally a large or XL in shirts, and I purchased an XXL rash guard.
Adoreism's Long Sleeve Rash Guard is what I wear, the long sleeve part is a personal preference as I have a good amount of arm hair.
I'd rather not let the people that I'm rolling with have to deal with that.
The best part of the long sleeves is that they put some unique designs on each arm which you can see below.
Athletic Shorts Without Pockets
Shorts without pockets is essential in a sport like Jiu Jitsu because any part of the body can get caught in the pocket and cause an injury in a millisecond.
These MMA cross-training shorts are perfect for any martial art. I routinely use these shorts in both Muay Thai classes and No Gi Jiu Jitsu classes, and I love them.
They're ultra-lightweight, and it has a velcro strap in the front to adjust how tight you want it around your waist.
My only complaint with these shorts would be that they come with laces inside of the shorts to tighten, which work great in the beginning, but after washing the laces come off.
Either way, the laces aren't necessary due to the velcro, but it was just something I noticed.
Thermal Legging Pants
Originally I purchased these thermal legging pants to not have my leg sweat or leg hair get on my rolling partners.
However, the best part of these leggings is the mat burns that it prevents on the knees.
I forgot to wear these leggings once to practice, and my knees were all scraped up from the mat in one practice.
Additionally, these leggings do a great job of holding everything in place in the groin area, especially during a roll.
This is what these skin-tight leggings look like on the actual legs.
