Broken Native Tattoo: Everything You Need to Know
In this page, we will go over Israel Adesanya's famous 'Broken Native' tattoo including what it means, and why he decided to get it.
What is the Meaning of Broken Native?
Adesanya would explain that he has always been the odd person out throughout his entire life, leading to the Broken Native tattoo on the top of his chest.
Over the years I just realized that will be my whole life story. I have always been like the odd one out. The bat among the dogs. The pebble among the stones. As a native, I am broken.
To fully understand his tattoo, one must understand Adesanya's background.
Adesanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria and at 10 years old moved to New Zealand.
Here, he would be heavily bullied to the point that he would take up martial arts in order to learn how to protect himself.
Despite being an elite Mixed Martial artist currently, he wouldn't take up kickboxing until he was 18 years old.
In fact, Adesanya was more interested in anime such as Naruto and Death Note.
Broken Native vs Broken Nation Confusion
Ironically many fans confuse Adesanya's Broken Native tattoo with it saying 'Broken Nation'.
It's understandable as it can be easily mistaken just by taking a quick look.
What adds to this confusion is the Africa tattoo positioned on the center of Adesanya's chest.
When fans glance at the text, and then glance at the country, it makes plenty of sense.
To be fair, Broken Native is positioned from the top of the right shoulder, across the entire chest, and all the way to the top of the left shoulder, which makes the first and last letters tough to read.
Both tattoos serve as a constant reminder to the life that he had growing up, compared to the life that he has now.
